Are UK boat prices finally falling? Q1 2026 data
We analysed 30,000+ listings across major UK and European sites. Here's where the deals are right now β and where sellers are still dreaming.
The post-pandemic premium is unwinding β but unevenly
The used boat market had an extraordinary run from 2020β2023. Covid-era demand, supply chain disruption on new builds, and a surge in first-time buyers pushed prices 25β40% above historic norms. That correction is now underway β but it's happening at different speeds in different segments.
Here's what BoatQuest data shows across 30,000+ active UK and European listings as of Q1 2026.
Sailing yachts 30β45ft: the correction is real
This is the core UK market β Beneteau, Jeanneau, Bavaria, Hallberg-Rassy. Prices here have fallen 12β18% from their 2022 peak in real terms (accounting for inflation, the drop is closer to 20%).
Why: This segment attracted the most pandemic-era buyers, many of whom are now selling. Supply has increased significantly. Demand from first-timers has softened as the novelty wore off.
Where the value is: Boats listed for 90+ days in this range. A 2015 Beneteau Oceanis 45 that sat at Β£135,000 in mid-2024 can now be had for Β£115,000β120,000 with a motivated seller. Our price benchmarking puts the 25th percentile for this category at around Β£82,000 for a 40ft boat built 2010β2016.
Motor cruisers: still sticky at the top
The flybridge motor cruiser market (Princess, Sunseeker, Sealine) has been more resistant to correction. Reasons:
- Running costs mean fewer casual buyers entered this market during the boom
- The buyer pool is wealthier and less rate-sensitive
- Good condition 40β50ft motor cruisers are genuinely scarce
Where the value is: Older (2005β2012) single-engine motor cruisers. The fuel cost of twin-engine boats is now an explicit conversation in every negotiation. Single-engine 35β40ft cruisers that would have been overlooked in 2021 represent genuine value right now.
Catamarans: the market that defied gravity
Production cruising cats (Lagoon, Fountaine Pajot, Leopard) remain extraordinarily expensive relative to monohulls. A 2016 Lagoon 450 will still achieve Β£350,000β400,000 β prices that would have seemed absurd five years ago.
This is a structural shift, not a bubble. Charter operators buy cats aggressively, removing supply from the private market. The global cruising community's preference for cats has fundamentally changed, and the order books for new cats remain years long.
The implication: If you want a cat and have budget flexibility, buy now. The correction in this segment, if it comes, will be modest.
What takes longest to sell
BoatQuest tracks days-on-market for every listing. The boats sitting longest right now:
1. Boats priced at 2022 peak values β sellers who haven't adjusted to the new reality
2. Boats with no photos or poor photos β a listing with 3 blurry photos takes twice as long to sell
3. Boats with known issues mentioned in the listing β osmosis disclosures, "engine needs attention" β buyers walk
4. Motor sailers β a category that appeals to almost nobody: not fast enough to sail, not comfortable enough to motor
The negotiation landscape right now
As a buyer, your leverage is higher than at any point since 2019. A few data points from our pricing analysis:
- Average discount to asking price in closed sales (UK): approximately 7β9%
- Boats listed 6+ months: sellers are typically open to 12β15% below asking with a clean offer and quick close
- Time of year matters: boats listed OctoberβFebruary sell for 5β8% less than the same boats listed AprilβJune
The practical implication: if you're a serious buyer, now is a better time than six months ago, and the market is likely to remain buyer-friendly through 2026.
How to use this data
Every BoatQuest listing shows a price percentile β where it sits relative to comparable boats on the market right now. A boat at the 30th percentile is priced better than 70% of its competitors. A boat at the 80th percentile is likely overpriced.
Use the Intelligence Report to understand not just where a boat sits in the market, but how long it's been there and what a realistic opening offer looks like.
